Hyaluronic acid is an important natural component of the joint fluid (synovial fluid) and of cartilage. In the knee, it is responsible for the visco-elasticity of the synovial fluid. With age, the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid decreases; this changes the composition of the synovial fluid and reduces its lubricating and elastic properties — which is part of why an osteoarthritic joint becomes painful and stiff.
